San Diego Home Theater Additions

Are you thinking of take your home entertainment experience to the next level? Consider adding a new space to your home (or transforming  an existing one) for a home theater.  Kaminskiy Design & Remodeling has helped dozens of San Diego area homeowners add home theaters to their homes that merge cinema style viewing with the comfort and relaxed atmosphere that only your home can provide.

What Typically Goes Into a Home Theater Addition?

If you are converting an existing space, there are many steps that must be taken to create a true theater experience. We recommend that the space be at least 16 x 25 feet and be relatively out of the way from the main flow of the house.  If the space is large enough, consider adding a platform for stadium style seating and viewing, a wet bar, or even a bathroom or small kitchen space.

In order to wire the room for surround sound – and it’s not a home theater without surround sound – the drywall must be removed and replaced (this is also when lighting and video components will be wired).  While the drywall is out, it’s a good think about soundproofing. Unless you like the look of egg crate foam panels, noise can be greatly dampened by replacing the old drywall with soundproof drywall – made from gypsum board and steel-like materials- and adding significant insulation to the walls.  Textured paint for the walls and thick acoustic underlayment for flooring – or installing carpet -can also help to reduce noise.

Video – Obviously, a great TV or projection system is essential for a home theater, but lighting in the room is just as important.  Glare from improperly places lights or windows can significantly diminish the video quality and your viewing enjoyment.

Audio components – A high end speaker system is a must have for home theaters as well. With a dedicated home theater, you have the freedom to choose the exact speakers you want, regardless of look or size, and have them positioned for the best possible performance.  Depending on the size of your room, you may consider using multiple subwoofers to deliver a smooth listening experience across the entire space.

Smart technology and the connection to the Internet of Things are the perfect technologies to integrate into your theater.  Auto dimming lights, connected TVs and speakers can all work together to enhance your space.

If your space is smaller, or don’t want to completely dedicate the space to theater type experiences, consider a media room for smaller scale enjoyment of music, television, computing and gaming.

How Much Will it Cost to Add a Home Theater in San Diego?

As with any remodeling project, the cost for a home theater addition will vary greatly based on the scope, finishes and location of the addition. If you are pouring foundation, and building a brand new structure, the national average is around $80,000 for a dedicated home theater.  As we mentioned before, home theaters have significant electrical components, soundproofing, and architectural considerations.  This cost would equate to around $207 per square foot, but could be higher or lower depending upon your situation.

Would a Home Theater Increase the Value of My Home?

A dedicated home theater is a very consumer specific space. For those whom want or expect to see one in a home, it can make a huge difference.  However, the better the design and the higher quality the components of your theater the more value it will add to your home.  It is always recommended that you hire a professional, rather that attempt a DIY project, to ensure that you install the best home theater products for your space and don’t waste money.  According to remodeling magazine, a finished, dedicated home theater addition in San Diego, will return about 65 percent on investment.
