Bathroom Remodel in San Diego

The Bathroom Remodel Process

While each bathroom remodel is as unique as a fingerprint, there are general steps to the process that apply to each remodel. We’ve created a step-by-step guide so that your San Diego bathroom remodel goes smoothly.

  • In-Home Consultation: We’ll listen to your thoughts and ideas in order to get an understanding of what it is you want the final product to look like.
  • Design and Bid Presentation: We will go over your ideas and come up with a unique remodel that caters to your wants and needs.
  • Remodel Plans and Permits: Using our state of the art computer modeling, we project an exact end look of your bathroom. We’ll also seek any necessary permits from the city.
  • Demolition: Removing old toilets, sinks, cabinets and/or shower heads is the first step to creating a brand new bathroom space for you and your family.
  • Construction: Appliances, wiring, plumbing, insulation, sealing and everything else that needs to be done to make your bathroom remodel dreams come true.
  • Enjoy your new bathroom!: Once we have ensured proper installation and have cleaned up everything, your sleek new bathroom will be ready for use.
  • Pros and Cons of Low Flow Toilets

With an increased focus on being environmentally friendly, low flow toilets are a big focus in bathroom remodels. On average, low-flow toilets use about half the gallons per flush as normal toilets. But are they really better than the alternative?

The big problem is one flush may not always be enough. Having to flush this toilet twice really defeats the purpose of installing one in the first place. We recommend using a dual-flush toilet; these have two options for flush capacity, depending on how much you need to flush. These will allow you to use about a half gallon more per flush when necessary.

Bathroom Additions

Adding an extra bathroom can make your home suit your family’s needs much better. Not having to wait in line to use the shower or brush your teeth or having a separate guest bath can make all the difference in the world.  However, an extra bathroom can also add significant value to your home and provide a solid return on investment.  According to a report by the National Association of Home Builders, homeowners who added a full bathroom to their home added nearly 20 percent to their home’s total value in 2015, while those who added a half bath added nearly 10 percent.  What’s more, nearly all of the homeowners were extremely happy with the results of their bathroom addition, earning the project a perfect 10 out of 10 for “joy score” (we did not make up the joy score).

Kid-Safe Bathroom Design

If you have very young children running around the home, you always want to make sure they’re safe. The majority of home accidents happen in the bathroom, but there are ways that you can remodel your bathroom to accommodate the little ones.

Bathmats may not be enough, so the first thing you can do is install slip-resistant flooring. Check to see if the bathroom tiles you pick are compliant with the American Disabilities Act for slip-resistant standards. Stone flooring with a textured surface can also be great for preventing slips.

Small children can have a tough time seeing above the counter, or stepping into the shower if it’s a tub. Small plastic stools may not stay in place very well, but installing steps is a simple solution. A lift-out step that appears when you open a drawer or cabinet beneath the sink is much more durable and reliable for preventing falls. An under mounted step into the basin, as well as a rail to hold on to, will make it much easier for them to climb in and out. Other things to consider include:

  • Choosing faucets and handles that are easy to use and are smooth and rounded with no sharp corners or edges.
  • Add more storage with locking cabinets to keep dangerous items out of reach
  • Consider using wainscoting or full wall tile to keep your drywall from getting soggy due to excessive splashing.

Bathroom Ventilation Tips

Keeping mold and mildew out of your bathroom is paramount to keeping a clean and healthy space. Proper ventilation is not part of the creative process of a bathroom remodel, but it is necessary. The size of the bathroom as well as the type of shower you’ll be installing has an affect on the number of fans your bathroom may need.

If your bathroom is 100 sq. feet or less, one fan placed above or near the shower is all you would need. The fan would need to be capable of 100 CFM (cubic feet of air moved) per minute.

If your bathroom is larger than 100 sq. feet, it’s recommended that each feature have it’s own fan. The size that would be needed for the shower depends on the type; if it’s just a walk-in stall, then 50 CFM would suffice. If it’s a tub, you’ll need one that approaches 100 CFM, especially if the bathroom is large. A window, if possible, would also be a big help for air ventilation.

Bathroom Plumbing

Properly configuring the plumbing is likely the most difficult part of a bathroom remodel. Sinks, showers and toilets obviously all need it, but what if you wish to install a whirlpool tub or perhaps a luxury shower with multiple shower heads? There are the typical hot and cold lines for the shower and the tub, along with lines for the sink and shower, but you also want to pick lines that are durable and won’t need repairs for years to come.

Most contractors are moving away from copper lines and gravitating towards cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipes, which are much more flexible with similar durability. PEX pipes come with a 25-year warranty and, at approximately ten percent of the cost of copper, allow you to maximize your budget.

Space-Saving Bathroom Design

As much as we’d love a large bathroom, many times space is at a premium. Extra towels, toiletries and cleaning products all need a storage spot. Wall mounted cabinets or shelving can be a big help in this regard if they’re placed correctly. Adjacent to the sink or above the toilet will help keep room to walk.

Mounting holders inside cabinets can be a big space-saver as well, and will also keep things organized. Toothbrushes, cosmetics and razors can all be conveniently hung up so that the actual shelves and drawers can be saved for the larger items.

Common Mistakes In A Bathroom Remodel

There are common pitfalls when it comes to remodeling your bathroom, some of which we have briefly mentioned: not paying proper attention to plumbing or ventilation can mean costly repairs and giant headaches down the road.

  • More does not mean better – A bathroom remodel should simplify the room and make life easier. We’ve mentioned the importance of saving space, so it’s important not to add too much clutter.
  • Poor lighting – Improper placement or inadequate illumination will just make getting ready that much more difficult.
  • No view out – while big windows aren’t always possible – or wanted – natural light is very important in a bathroom. If a window isn’t an option, get creative and put in a skylight.
  • Focusing on the toilet – The toilet is an important part of any bathroom, but it shouldn’t be the focus of the room or the first thing you see when you open the door.
  • Bad sealing – Leaks are the absolute last thing you’ll want to deal with after committing so much time and money to the remodel. Be sure all tiles, appliances, drains, pipes and anything else are sealed shut and flush to the wall.
